Synopsis
The story takes place in 1633, during the Thirty Years’ War between Protestants and Catholics in Germany and throughout Europe.
Manfred Von Kriek is a young German Catholic aristocrat, a warrior by filial duty but a painter at heart.
Obeying the orders of his father and the powerful Lord Wallenstein, he is tasked with reaching Lübeck, a Protestant stronghold, to bring back his uncle Hermann, his beautiful wife Sanguine, and, most importantly, the fortune and diamonds that will allow Wallenstein to finance his campaigns. Falling under the spell of his young aunt, they all flee together from the Protestant soldiers.
But their journey south will be fraught with peril, political intrigue, and the horrors of war, and their final destination will likely be madness.
What we thought of it :
‘Sanguine is a well-crafted album, with a skillfully controlled atmosphere and consistently expressive artwork.
However, I must admit that it’s not really the kind of plot I enjoy.
The romantic relationship with his aunt made me a little uncomfortable; it’s not a theme that resonates with me or that I like to see in a comic.
Despite this, the album remains solid, well-structured, and the talent behind the series is evident.
In short: not entirely for me in terms of the story, but a quality piece of work.’
