Séverine Tréfouël: A Committed Screenwriter Who Keeps Memory Alive

Séverine Tréfouël is a French comic book writer who has made a name for herself in contemporary graphic novels thanks to powerful stories, often centered on real and remarkable human figures.
Her narratives are moving, frequently linked to memory, and offer a deeply human perspective on history.

A career built on passion (and choice)

From a young age, Séverine was fascinated by comics: she spent hours reading them at the local library.

Her university studies weren’t initially related to comics, but she eventually returned to her true passion.
She first became a comic book specialist at Bédérama.

The turning point came in 2009: author Jean-David Morvan recognized her writing talent and offered her the opportunity to co-write scripts. This marked the beginning of her career as a published comic book author.

Influential Comic Books

Her most important works:
With Youth United, created with illustrator Wuye, Séverine Tréfouël published her very first graphic novel. This project also marked the beginning of a significant collaboration with screenwriter Jean-David Morvan.

She then followed with Ocelot, illustrated by Agnès Fouquart, an adventure story.

Next came the Irena series, comprising five volumes published by Glénat, co-written with Jean-David Morvan and illustrated by David Evrard. This work recounts the story of Irena Sendlerowa, a Polish resistance fighter who saved thousands of Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II.

She also contributed to the Simone trilogy, a powerful and essential tribute to Simone Lagrange, a resistance fighter tortured by Klaus Barbie.

Séverine often works on historical memory, highlighting strong women whose stories have been too often overlooked.

A renowned and committed screenwriter

Her writing is distinguished by its humanism: she speaks of real people, courage, resilience, and characters who fight against injustice.
The public has clearly recognized this: Irena has made a lasting impression on readers, and the awards received in Chambéry confirm the project’s impact.

With her graphic novels, Séverine Tréfouël doesn’t simply “bring history to life”: she explores what it means to resist, to protect, to dare, and to speak out.
Today, she is among the contemporary graphic novel writers to watch, particularly for those interested in memory, biographical narratives, and the passing down of knowledge.
