Synopsis

The true story of a forgotten heroine.

Irena Sendlerowa, a Polish resistance fighter and activist, died in 2008 and was declared Righteous Among the Nations in 1965. She was one of the greatest heroines of World War II, saving nearly 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto.

And yet, she is forgotten by history books… It was while reading an article about her by chance that Jean-David Morvan had his epiphany: her life story had to be told. With Séverine Tréfouël and David Evrard, they recount the humanitarian struggle of this “mother of the children of the Holocaust.”

Driven by exquisitely sensitive artwork and presented for the first time in a complete edition that embraces all the conventions of the graphic novel,
Irena achieves the remarkable feat of addressing a powerful, poignant, and profoundly relevant subject with a light touch. It touches the heart, evokes emotion, and speaks of the past to tell the story of today.

What we thought of it :

‘I knew that some people had risked their lives to save others in the ghettos, but Irena really allowed me to put a name and a face to one of these heroines.

The series is a great read, for both children and adults, and the messages are perfectly placed.

I’m not a fan of historical fiction at all, but I devoured this one in one sitting!
Honestly, congratulations to Séverine Tréfouël for this graphic novel that really moved me.’
