Madeleine’s life was full of Tintin-esque adventures, but on the side of the Resistance and anti-colonialism!” explains screenwriter Jean-David Morvan, who became friends with this woman, one of the last living witnesses to the liberation of Paris. This commitment marked her entire life, particularly her anti-colonial struggle in Vietnam and Algeria.
Madeleine Riffaud was born in 1924. The daughter of schoolteachers, she grew up in Picardy and joined the Resistance in 1942 in Paris, where she adopted the name Rainer, in homage to the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke. A friend of Paul Éluard, Picasso, and Ho Chi Minh, and a poet and writer herself, she became a renowned reporter after the war.
What I loved about Madeleine, Resistance Fighter, is that the story is told through her own memories. I truly felt like Madeleine was speaking directly to me, confiding in me about her life, her fears, her choices, and her courage.
The fact that everything is based on her memory makes the story even more powerful and moving. I learned a lot about the Resistance, but especially about what ordinary people were capable of in extraordinary situations.
This graphic novel really resonated with me; it’s both moving and important. A real favorite that I wholeheartedly recommend.
